Tsallis Statistics as a Tool for Studying Interstellar Turbulence

چکیده
We used magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of interstellar turbulence to study the probability distribution functions (PDFs) of increments of density, velocity, and magnetic field. We found that the PDFs are well described by a Tsallis distribution, following the same general trends found in solar wind and Electron MHD studies. We found that the PDFs of density are different in subsonic and supersonic turbulence. In order to extend this work to ISM observations we studied maps of column density obtained from 3D MHD simulations. From the column density maps we found the parameters that fit to Tsallis distributions and demonstrated that these parameters vary with the Mach and Alfvénic Mach numbers of turbulence. This opens avenues for using Tsallis distributions to study the dynamical and magnetic states of interstellar gas. Subject headings: ISM: general — MHD — turbulence

Superstatistics in hydrodynamic turbulence
Superstatistics is a ‘statistics of a statistics’ relevant for driven nonequilibrium systems with fluctuating intensive parameters. It contains Tsallis statistics as a special case. We show that probability density functions of velocity differences and accelerations measured in Eulerian and Lagrangian turbulence experiments are well reproduced by simple superstatistics models. We compare fits o...
متن کاملOn the small-scale statistics of Lagrangian turbulence
We provide evidence that the small-scale statistics of the acceleration of a test particle in high-Reynolds number Lagrangian turbulence is correctly described by Tsallis statistics with entropic index q = 3 2 . We present theoretical arguments why Tsallis statistics can naturally arise in Lagrangian turbulence and why at the smallest scales q = 32 is relevant. A generalized Heisenberg-Yaglom f...

Observations of radio signals from distant pulsars provide a valuable tool for investigation of interstellar turbulence. The time shapes of the signals are the result of pulse broadening by the fluctuating electron density in the interstellar medium. While the scaling of the shapes with the signal frequency is well understood, the observed anomalous scaling with respect to the pulsar distance h...
متن کاملStudying Turbulence from Doppler-broadened Absorption Lines: Statistics of Logarithms of Intensity
We continue our work on developing techniques for studying turbulence with spectroscopic data. We show that Doppler-broadened absorption spectral lines, in particularly, saturated absorption lines, can be used within the framework of the earlier-introduced technique termed the Velocity Coordinate spectrum (VCS). The VCS relates the statistics of fluctuations along the velocity coordinate to the...
متن کاملThe Tsallis Distribution and Generalised Entropy: Prospects for Future Research into Decision-Making under Uncertainty
1. Introduction This paper reviews recent work on the properties of Tsallis distributions, Tsallis statistics, anomalous diffusion and multi-fractal processes. Processes of this kind have the capacity to represent natural phenomena that are associated with turbulence and emerging complexity. However, in addition they may also capture crucial aspects of human decision-making in response to condi...
